Step 3. Goals and Objectives
- focusing the curriculum
DEFINITION
l A goal or objective is defined as an end toward which an effort is directed.
l Goal : broad educational objective, Objective : specific measurable objective.
IMPORTANCE
l Help direct the choice of curricular content and the assignment of relative priorities to various components of the curriculum
l Suggest what learning methods will be most effective
l Enable evaluation of learners and the curriculum, thus permitting demonstration of the effectiveness of a curriculum.
l Suggest what evaluation methods are appropriate
l Clearly communicate to others, such as learners, faculty, program directors, department chairs, and individuals from other institutions, what the curriculum addresses and hopes to achieve
WRITING OBJECTIVES

Table 4.1
TYPES OF OBJECTIVE (Learner, Process, Outcome
l Learner Objectives (Cognitive, Affective, Psychomotor domain)
n Cognitive domain
Cognitive domain은 spectrum of mental skills를 모두 포함하는 개념.
u Bloom’s taxonomy à Revised by Anderson et al.
l 1. Remember : To recall or recognize relevant knowledge
l 2. Understand : To construct meaning from information; to interpret, explain, compare, or summarize communications
l 3. Apply : To execute or implement a procedure in a given situation
l 4. Analyze : To break material into its constituents and determine how parts relate to each other to organize, differentiate, or assign an attribution
l 5. Evaluate : To make judgment based on criteria and standards
l 6. Create : To put elements together; reorganize; generate hypothesis; plan a project
n Affective domain :
u 주로 “attitudinal” objective : specific attitudes, values, beliefs…
n Psychomotor domain
n Miller’s assessment pyramid : knows – knows how – shows how – does
u Skill objective (knowledge) à Performance objective (knowledge, attitudes, skills)
l Process Objectives
n Logic model (visual representation of causal links) 에서는 “output”이라고도 함.
l Outcome Objectives
n Health, health care, patient outcome과 관련된 objective
ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS
l Manageable number of specific measurable objectives
n Interpret the goals
n Focus and prioritize curricular components that are critical to the realization of the goals
n Encourage creativity, flexibility, and nonspecified learning relevant to the curriculum’s goals.
