What problems were addressed?
In medical student education, perhaps no period is more challenging than the transition from pre-clinical to clinical learning. As they entered the clinical arena, in which the motto ‘see one, do one, teach one’ reigns supreme for rapid teaching and skills acquisition, we recogni- sed there was no standard that enabled pre-clinical students to ‘see’ their role on a team before they were required to ‘do’ it.
What was tried?
We developed a student-initiated, near-peer shadowing programme for medical stu- dents and physician assistant-students in their final pre-clinical semester at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine (Iowa City, Iowa, USA). Near- peer learning utilises more senior students as teach- ers who are credible role models because they have advanced in the curriculum by successfully applying the skills commonly taught in such sessions.1
Pre-clinical students selected one morn- ing on one of several available in-patient services and were paired with a clinical student-teacher on that service. Expectations for all participants were distributed 1 week prior to the experience and out- comes were assessed using electronic surveys.
