타일러 디윗(Tyler DeWitt): 과학 선생님들! -- 재미있게 합시다

"정서적 교감"은 좋은 스토리텔링의 기본입니다. 물론, 청중들로 하여금 지금 내가 하고 있는 이 이야기가 중요하다고 느끼게 하는 것은 중요합니다. 하지만 동시에 이야기의 핵심을 유지하는 가운데 어떠한 세부사항을 가지치기해낼 것인가를 아는 것도 중요합니다. 건축가인 미스 반 데 로에의 말을 빌리자면 이렇습니다. "우리는 진실을 전달하기 위해서 가끔 거짓말을 해야 할 때도 있다" 아마 이러한 태도는 특히 과학을 가르치는데 있어서 더욱 중요하지 않을까요. 

Because good storytelling is all about emotional connection. We have to convince our audience that what we're talking about matters. But just as important is knowing which details we should leave out so that the main point still comes across. I'm reminded of what the architect Mies van der Rohe said, and I paraphrase, when he said that sometimes you have to lie in order to tell the truth. I think this sentiment is particularly relevant to science education.

사람들이 종종 저에게 과학을 수준을 낮추고 있다고 하지만, 전혀 그렇지 않습니다. 저는 현재 MIT의 박사과정에 있으며 과학에 있어 '세부적인 내용'이 얼마나 중요한지 잘 알고 있습니다. 하지만 이것은 그 분야의 전문가들간의 대화에서 그렇다는 뜻이지, 열세살짜리 학생을 가르칠 때까지 그렇다는 의미가 아닙니다. 과학을 배우는 단계의 어린 학생이 '모든 바이러스는 DNA가 있어'라는 수준의 틀린 지식을 갖게 된다고 해서 그 아이가 과학을 공부하고, 그렇게 성공할 가능성 자체를 망치진 않습니다. 하지만 만약 과학에 대해서 아무것도 이해하지 못하고 과학 공부하는 것 자체를 싫어하게 된다면 이것은 아이가 가진 잠재력의 싹을 자르는 것과 같습니다. 

Now, finally, I am often so disappointed when people think that I'm advocating a dumbing down of science. That's not true at all. I'm currently a Ph.D. student at MIT, and I absolutely understand the importance of detailed, specific scientific communication between experts,but not when we're trying to teach 13-year-olds. If a young learner thinks that all viruses have DNA, that's not going to ruin their chances of success in science. But if a young learner can't understand anything in science and learns to hate it because it all sounds like this, that will ruin their chances of success.

무언가를 해보시고 싶다면 카메라를 집어들어도 좋고, 블로그를 하셔도 좋습니다. '심각함'만은 던져두세요. '전문용어'도 마찬가지고요. 웃게 만들어 주세요. 관심을 갖게 해주세요. 아무도 신경쓰지 않는 귀찮은 세세한 것들은 던져버리고 바로 핵심으로 들어가세요. 어떻게 시작하면 좋겠나고요? 이렇게 해보세요. "내가 이야기를 하나 해줄께. 들어볼래?"

Pick up a camera, start to write a blog, whatever, but leave out the seriousness, leave out the jargon. Make me laugh. Make me care. Leave out those annoying details that nobody cares about and just get to the point. How should you start?Why don't you say, "Listen, let me tell you a story"?
