It is suggested that we derive our very sense of self through interactions with others.1 All individuals in health professions education (HPE)—students, faculty, administrative staff, nurses and allied health professionals—are connected through relationships and intersecting social circles that create the essence of learning experiences. Gruppen et al describe these interactions as the social component of the learning environment.2 ‘All these social relationships influence what and how students learn and shapes their perceptions of and experiences within the learning environment (pp. 970)’. To render this dimension of the learning environment visible, HPE scholarship requires elegant research approaches that can capture the who and how in regards to the influence of social processes in HPE spaces. Visual mapping of participants' social networks is gaining traction in the HPE literature,3-5 yet the underpinnings of this research approach has received little attention.

Meaningful connection cannot materialise without some sort of action that matters to people in actual, imagined, or virtual-simulated worlds.6 In this State of the Science paper, we introduce a qualitative ego network analysis approach that visually maps individuals' perceptions of their self in relation to learning situations and social context. The terms ego network and personal network are often used interchangeably.7 In this paper, we adopt the term ego networks to represent participants' perceptions of their social connections. Ego is thus experienced as ‘self’ or ‘I’ and connects with the external world through perception.

Many methodologies can explore participants' social worlds. A qualitative ego network approach is a visual method well positioned to enhance expression of tacit social knowledge. This approach stimulates reflections of one's social environment from one's vantage point.8 Ego network visualisations, combined with qualitative data, can harvest rich, complex, deep insights, while uniquely revealing hidden relational data that the researcher may not observe.9 People's viewpoint of their relationships is important to capture because individuals' behaviours and beliefs are conditioned by their perception of the social world they inhabit, rather than by reality itself.10, 11 Visually capturing participants' subjective social experiences can reveal to them, researchers and institutions how educational experiences are created across diverse unanticipated social boundaries and how perceptions of others influence behaviour, attitudes, values and opportunities.12

In this paper, we showcase structured and unstructured participant-generated qualitative ego network approaches. We then balance the paper with our critical reflections of a qualitative ego network approach. Our goal is to help novice and seasoned researchers navigate a qualitative ego network approach. Introducing this approach is particularly timely as the field of HPE works towards enlarging understanding of the interlacing of self, society and situation.

2 SNA가 무엇입니까?
2 WHAT IS SNA?

Social network analysis (SNA) is shaped by diverse branches of science such as physics, biology, economics, public health, sociology, mathematics and national security, to name only a few. SNA approaches have organically grown to encompass numerous theories, models and applications.13 Although SNA has undergone a fascinating and eclectic evolution, there are different strands of concepts and methods that characterise the approach. These originations derive from a blend of graph and matrix algebra theory, sociometric and anthropological methods.14 SNA scholars do not see individuals as autonomous and isolated; instead, individuals are interdependently situated in contextualised settings. SNA is a research approach uniquely positioned to capture dynamic social interactions in HPE contexts. SNA starts with the premise that when individuals learn and work in specific social and cultural settings, human interactions shape the constraints and opportunities they encounter and their behaviours and beliefs.11 Learners are active agents who are embedded with people, groups, teams, organisations and societies. SNA typically focuses on connections between humans,15 although other entities have been included such as power stations and human genes.16

2.1 SNA: 패러다임
2.1 SNA: A paradigm

A paradigm consists of the concepts, practices and language that define a particular approach to science.17 What underpins a SNA paradigm is an interest in the patterns of relationships that form social structure.18

  • The ontology that threads this paradigm together is an orientation that the social world is relational thus reality emerges through relationships.
  • Social network scholars adopt an epistemological position where knowledge is generated through understanding the nature and dynamics of social ties (ie social relations) as they interact with each other within a social structure.19
  • Axiologically, SNA intrinsically values interdependence. Therefore, a binding assumption is that relationships form the essence of the human experience. Not surprisingly, the unit of analysis in SNA is the relationship.5

2.2 SNA의 이질성
2.2 The heterogeneity of SNA

Isba et al in a previous issue of Medical Education remarked the vast potential for SNA to answer questions fundamental to the field of HPE.5 SNA can extend across quantitative and qualitative approaches20 to illuminate social phenomenon pertinent to understanding the role of relationships on learning in HPE settings. Quantitative SNA statistically measures positions and connections in networks.21 Qualitative SNA explores the subjective meaning of relationships.20 While mixed methods SNA approaches emphasize the structural dimensions of networks and the meaning underlying social processes and interactions.20, 22

The typology of SNA research is organised into three levels of analysis depending on the research question:

  • ego or node level (an individual's/self's relationships),
  • dyad level (relationships between two people) and
  • whole/network level (multiple interwoven relationships between individuals in a particular social space).11

These levels facilitate a variety of documentation and analysis of social network dimensions, including meaning, size, density, centralisation, tie strength, bridges, betweenness and change over time.

SNA is a paradigm that can be employed theoretically and/or methodologically. Given its complex use, researchers make a number of choices as it relates to the alignment between their research philosophy, methodological choices and data collection procedures. Figure 1 is an adaptation of the popular research onion of Saunders et al23 which describe the decisions SNA researchers can make when employing SNA.

  • Figure 1 allows explicit consideration of the ways in which theory can underpin SNA work dynamically depending on the research design.
  • Moreover, Figure 1 emphasises the variety of SNA data collection techniques that can be employed to answer a research question. For example, visual maps (ie sociograms) have been used as data in grounded theory research24 and ethnographic research.25 Others have described a longitudinal ethnographic study design where they ‘borrowed’26 elements of SNA theory and employed qualitative ego network methods to explore patterns of social interaction around health.27

It is beyond the scope of this paper to describe broadly the complex heterogeneity of theory integration, data collection approaches and analytic techniques. For those who want to expand understanding of the range of SNA approaches to address specific relationally focused research questions, we suggest these detailed, entry-level resources.11, 20, 28-30

3 QUALITATIVE SNA APPROACHES IN HPE

Qualitative approaches to SNA are nascent and underutilised in HPE. This approach is interested in the ways power, status, meanings, emotions and identities emerge in relationships and shape perceptions and experiences of the learning environment. Attention applied to the quality of interactions can highlight how communication, behaviour, knowledge, resources and innovation emerge and flow thorough social relations and even organisations.31 Qualitative SNA approaches allow researchers not only to consider the structure of a network (eg ties are present or absent) but also to explore creation, variability, dynamics and meanings of social ties.20

Engaging in SNA does not mean that researchers have to let go of their qualitative toolkits.32 Qualitative social network researchers collect a variety of qualitative data to explore the nature of relationships and outcomes of these relationships. Some examples of qualitative data collection methods that can be used in SNA include individual interviews, focus groups, participant diaries, demographic data, field observations and archival sources.28 SNA visualisation techniques are typically used to render visible patterns of relationships that would otherwise escape the human gaze.33

As such, SNA qualitative approaches are well positioned to help us understand challenging and fraught social complexities nested in HPE learning environments. Moreover, qualitative approaches to SNA can help us understand how and why learners traverse different social landscapes, expanding our perceptual boundaries of social context. For example, the quantitative SNA research of Hommes et al discovered that informal student to student social interactions are strongly associated with medical students' learning.34 However, the authors emphasised that qualitative approaches are needed to unpack how informal social interaction facilitate student learning.34 In another study, qualitative social network data have revealed how academics developed a range of emotional, academic and professional support mostly outside the academic development teaching contexts.35 Qualitative SNA can thus unearth hidden meaningful relationships outside of formal educational settings.

4 QUALITATIVE EGO NETWORKS IN HPE

Many qualitative approaches have been used to gain insights into individuals' social experiences in HPE contexts—for example, ethnography,36 phenomenology37 narrative inquiry38 or grounded theory.39 Moreover, a variety of visual methods such as photovoice, photography, drawings, rich pictures, Pictor technique and video have been introduced as ways to visually capture the experiences of participants.9, 40, 41 Although ego network approaches are increasingly employed in HPE research,3, 4 this is the first paper that delves deeply into the underpinnings and techniques of a qualitative ego network approach.

An ego network (ie egocentric) approach is defined by the ego (ie the participant); the ego is the orienting focal point, and this person defines the composition of their network. Relationships (called ties in SNA terminology) are often represented by lines between the ego and others.18 Thus, the inclusion of ties for ego networks are driven by the connections to the focal participant. This approach reveals an individual's perception of their interactions and relationships with others, emphasising the meaning and dynamics of their local social structures.28 Data on an ego network can be obtained either quantitatively,42, 43 qualitatively4 or using mixed methods.3 Table 1 provides a comparison of quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods approaches to explore ego networks in HPE.

A qualitative ego network approach orients the research question, data collection strategies and analysis towards the meaning and nature of relationships that form the essence of individuals' experiences. Those engaging in qualitative ego network approaches must report the same transparency and explicitness expected of all qualitative reporting.44 This is particularly important when reporting qualitative ego network approaches as this approach tends to be flexible rather than rigid or procedural.25 In particular, we encourage explicit and transparent reporting of methods including paradigmatic and theoretical underpinning, methodological choices, research approach, level of networks, time dimension and data (see Figure 1). Given the heterogeneity of social network research, extensive reporting of methods is critical in order to facilitate judgements about the trustworthiness, relevance and transferability to other's context and to the broader literature.44

4.1 Ego
4.1 Ego network visualisation

Ego network visualisation portrays an individual's perception of their network (eg medical students' descriptions of who in their network shapes meaning of early significant clinical experiences).45 In essence, ego network sociograms replicate the social world experienced by research participants and can extend beyond predetermined inclusion criteria (ie researcher imposed social boundaries).32 In our own work, participants have illuminated intriguing range in terms of their networks' boundaries. These social boundaries have spanned beyond institutional educational settings to include influences of friends and family.3, 4, 45

Although an ego network visualisation could standalone as a sole source of qualitative data similarly to other visual methods,9 qualitative SNA researchers often seek a deeper understanding through interviewing3, 4, 45, 46 and other forms of qualitative data collection (eg observations).27 Interviews are particularly useful to unpack the nature, function, dynamics, complexity and meaning of specific relationships depicted in sociograms from the subjective perspective of ego.47

Name generation techniques
are often used as starting points to explore individuals' social networks whether elicited using quantitative (surveys) or qualitative (interview questions) methods.48 For example, an approach for interviewing is to ask participants who they interact with around a phenomenon of interest and then explore more deeply the nature of those relationship. Name generation techniques lead researchers and participants towards rich visual representations of social networks. These social network visualisations (sociograms) can be researcher- or participant-generated visuals.9 Visualisations can be created by the participant or researcher as the interviewer is conversing with participants during an interview. Moreover, the visualisations can also be created after the interview or when analysing data.

Typically, ego network sociograms arise from participants listing their network ties (name generation) during the interview, whereas the researcher probes through interviewing into the nature and meaning of these relationships. The visual mapping produced during the interview by the participant or researcher can stimulate insights from participants that are unrehearsed and difficult to capture using only interviews.9, 40 Moreover, participants can edit and re-edit their narrative response to the sociogram that enriches our understanding.49 Member checking is used if this is feasible for the researcher as it can ensure participants' maps accurately capture their experience, particularly if researcher generated.

The researcher can create the ego network typically using SNA software,27 or participants can generate their own ego network.34 There are some overt similarities to the Pictor technique where participants use arrows to depict their social connections.941 However, an ego network approach can be less restrictive because it incites a range of techniques and strategies to represent dimensions of one's social environment. Participants can use paper and coloured pens to create their ego network on pieces of paper, rendering a multifaceted representation of their network. Participants can also use features like shapes, line width and arrows to visually highlight dimensions of connection.50 For example, conceptual distance between the participant and others or intensity of influence.

There is no prescribed way to create an ego network and many creative approaches have been used to generate ego network sociograms. Moreover, ego network data are analysed flexibly and depend to some extent on the skillset of the researcher. For example, it would be legitimate to use thematic analysis,3 constant comparative analysis,4 content analysis or narrative analysis to integrate and interpret ego network visuals and interview data. Data collection can be iterative, but this is not an expectation and depends on the design and time affordances of the researcher. In the following, we showcase two in-depth examples of different qualitative ego network approaches we have employed in our research.

4.1.1 Example 1: Structured approach to participant-generated ego networks

In one study,3 Atherley et al explored the social networks impacting undergraduate medical students' experiences transitioning to clinical training. Atherley et al employed a subjectivist fully theory-informed inductive approach (see Figure 1), which means the theory informed all aspects of the study design.51 They used a SNA paradigm to inform the study design alongside sensitising concepts from landscapes of practice theory52 to consider the structure and boundaries of social networks of eight medical students transitioning to the clinical environment.

Atherley et al employed the method of concentric circles3 as a template for ego network (ie sociogram) creation during semi-structured interviews. This ‘structured’ approach to network maps50 is sometimes preferred by participants over other methods of eliciting network data.50 Participants first made a list of anyone they deemed to influence their transitioning experiences entering clerkships (ie name generation). Atherley et al placed no limitation on the number of ties that participants could indicate. Then, using large paper with four empty concentric circles, participants reflectively placed members of their social network on these circles being able to highlight the perceived strength of their influence (Table 1, Colum 3). The innermost circle represented social ties who had the most impact on the participant, and the outermost circle represented those who participants perceived had the least impact on their transition experiences (Table 1, Column 3).3 This approach facilitated comparability of networks due to the concentric circle structure. Moreover, interviews allowed deep dive into why participants chose the persons in their networks and in what ways the relationship impacted the transition.50 Participants could not use shapes and colours when creating their ego network that may have inhibited their agency in terms of the visualisation expression of their social network.50

Atherley et al used a semi-structured interview guide to discuss social influences and understand how ties helped or hindered participants' transition experiences.3, 50 Participants were encouraged to add social ties at any time during the interview. Four months later, these data collection procedures were repeated to capture any changes overtime. They used an audio recorder and video camera to record the interviews. The video recording aided interpretation of transcripts as Atherley et al could identify which ties participants were referencing as they spoke about their ego network connections.

Atherley et al used a mixed methods approach to our analysis.3, 30 They first quantitatively analysed the structure of the networks and compared the composition of roles of all ties using Pearson's chi-square statistic. This allowed the authors to see the composition of the types of people students perceived impacted their transition to clinical training.3 They then conducted iterative qualitative analysis of interview transcripts, sociograms and video recordings to make interpretations alongside the descriptive quantitative data.3 Thematic analysis, utilising sensitising concepts from landscapes of practice, facilitated intrapersonal comparison of all ties and interpersonal comparability of the network maps, all while bearing the dimension of time in mind. Through integration of the quantitative and qualitative data, Atherley et al were able to explore the distance to ego, how the strength of relationships varied between types of ties (eg doctors vs family vs nurses). The study provided new knowledge on the social environment of medical students transitioning to clinical training.53 The use of an ego network approach was critical for identifying the diversity of people medical students depend on, the dynamic changes in relationships that occur and the deliberate network management students engaged in depending on whether a tie provided some kind of emotional or instrumental support.3

4.1.2 Example 2: Participant-generated ego networks

In another example, Buckley and Nimmon4 explored how teaching faculty's relationships influenced their learning about teaching. Participants were asked to fill out a short demographic questionnaire that included information about, age, educational background and years of teaching experience. This was followed by semi-structured interview questions. After several interview questions, participants were instructed to draw an ego network (ie sociogram) of the network of colleagues that were influential in their learning about teaching. Buckley and Nimmon provided a mock ego network to use as a prompt, and instructions were provided about ways to emphasise the significance of thickness of ties and of size of nodes. For example, thicker ties represented closer relationships, and dotted ties represented more fragmented relationships. Once the ego networks were drawn (Table 1, Column 2), the participants were asked to verbally characterise and expand upon the features of the relationships represented in their sociograms during the remainder of the interview. The sociograms thus functioned as a narrative stimulus for further questioning on the influence these relationships had on participants' learning about teaching.

The transcripts were analysed iteratively in three stages: item, pattern and structural analysis.54 This approach to qualitative data analysis draws on a constant comparative approach. The maps and the elements of the image (sizes, thickness and distances) were used throughout analysis as comparative visual data to augment the narrative descriptions of participants provided in the transcripts.40 For example, noting the presence or absence of bridging ties between participant colleagues on their sociograms reinforced participant descriptions of perceived collegial connections or sense of community. In addition, the demographic data contextualised the participants' backgrounds, such as age, years of teaching experience and professional background. The coding and analysis of multiple sources of data was non-linear and ultimately helped crystallise and deepen understanding of the information.4

A SNA paradigmatic orientation informed the study design, which is described as a subjectivist fully theory-informed inductive approach.51 The study was thus designed with attention placed on the participant existing within a relational environment. During the latter stages of data analysis, however, Vygotsky's social learning theory was integrated to view colleagues functioning as a scaffold for their learning which became one of the central insights of this work.4 This is described in the literature as a subjectivist theory-informing inductive data analysis approach.51 This complex use of theory demonstrates that there is no universal way to use theory in SNA studies (see Figure 1) or in any qualitative study for that matter.55 Buckley and Nimmon's use of multiple theories employed at different stages of the study helped them see and interpret the phenomena from a variety of perspectives.55

The study ultimately deflected attention away from the traditional focus on individual faculty present in the faculty development literature. Instead, the insights highlighted the value of the broad relational context of faculty participants and revitalised conceptualisations of faculty development as non-hierarchical collective learning.4

5 Ego
5 CRITICAL REFLECTIONS OF AN EGO NETWORK APPROACH

Many of the limitations and strengths of visual methods have been elegantly captured in the HPE literature.9 We contribute to this conversation by reflecting on some of the unique limitations and affordances a researcher might consider when engaging with qualitative ego network approaches.

5.1 Implicit assumptions

We must be mindful of the assumptions we make in terms of accessibility of this type of visual medium and who it includes and excludes.49, 50 In our studies, the participants were medical students or faculty members at medical schools in developed countries.3, 4 Thus, the participants were highly educated and literate. However, in Example 1 above, some participants spoke English as a second language. We were sensitive that participants who spoke English as a second language may find it burdensome to create a visual map while engaging in an interview. Thus, we had participants first create their maps, followed by interviewing them about their ties; during this discussion, participants were able to adjust their map. Further, it may be implicitly Eurocentric to use an approach that focuses on the individual self in their social world. For example, some cultures may not view themselves in the centre of a social world50 but rather may see themselves interwoven in an interconnected social system. It is thus critical to evaluate how this approach may privilege a dominant Eurocentric worldview49 through a focus on ego and self.

5.2 Grappling with boundaries of the social

There are constraints with an ego network approach in terms of understanding whether the social ties named by participants are reciprocated by those named. For example, if a medical student Elisa names four core members of her peer support network, but we cannot know if the peers who are named experience reciprocated bidirectional support from Elisa. The ego network approach thus imposes boundaries on what we can know regarding the social network in question. If a researcher wished to explore an entire first year medical school cohort to understand who studies with who, an ego network approach would be limiting. Instead, a complete (ie whole) network approach could be employed to capture an overarching structural view of a social network. This whole network approach is commonly employed as a quantitative approach.5

5.3 A snapshot in time

A limitation arises if we accept representations of participants' perceptions of their social world as reified and static. Social relations are aggregated by the researcher and analysed as discrete past events. It may be more appropriate to conceptualise social relations in continuous time, as it accounts for how ‘networks may develop by spurts or build slowly and steadily, or how they may reflect repeated ritual behaviours that mix moments of order and chaos’.56(p1209)

Dynamic social relations contain dimensions of relational pace (eg seconds, weeks and decades) or rate of change in relations (eg fast, slow and accelerating), often containing traces of irregularities.57 The pace and change in relationships will depend on each unique social context and vary across types of relationships.56 To advance a qualitative ego network approach, it may be beneficial to draw on a concept of continuous renditions of time, which consists of sequential relational events or interactions that unfold as a continuous social process.57 This perspective can help us understand, for example,

  • (a) the overlapping and changing nature of participants' interpretations of self and the social world they inhabit and
  • (b) interactional meaning making across time in the learning environment.

We concur with the notion that time–space intersections are essentially involved in all social existence.58 To achieve a multiple timescale analysis, one idea is to integrate a social theory of time that captures local, idiosyncratic, context-dependent ways of experiencing time.59 A ‘social time’ perspective foregrounds the relational rhythms of everyday life. This lens can stretch our understanding of the ego's relational experience outside of the prevailing orientation towards linear clock/machine time.59 Moreover, longitudinal qualitative ego network research may overcome the limitations of rendering social relations as occurring in fixed, discrete moments of time.60

5.4 Social memory challenges

Recall or social memory is a specific challenge in respect to ego network data collection. Generally, people tend to be inaccurate in reporting past social interactions unless they are important (ie strong ties).61 Moreover, some people can more accurately recall recent events regarding who they communicated with in the previous 24 h compared with the week before.62 Others have proposed that participants' varying ability to perceive the world around them is an interesting insight in itself and can explain consequences for outcomes like workplace performance.63, 64 Observational data may deepen understanding of the social phenomenon studied. For instance, divergent observational data may capture people the focal participant neglects to name as important ties. This does not discredit the findings but can enhance rigour and enrich multifaceted understanding of a social phenomenon.65

5.5 Revealing the social

Although an ego network approach does its ‘magic’ by making visible the invisible, there can be insidious effects of revealing connections between individuals. For example, participants can become aware of isolation and loneliness when creating their ego network or if the researcher generates and shows the participant a representation of their network.33 Researchers should have a plan for support approved by ethics boards should participants signal emotional distress. It is worth mentioning that we have found some affordances in participants creating their ego networks and being asked questions about their social ties. They often deeply reflect on the meaning of the relationships they have built, dissolved or maintained.3, 45 Participants benefit from reflecting on their social relationships that can stimulate a sense of social support,66 and foster systemic and structural awareness.8, 67 In one of our datasets, a medical student, in contemplating his social network, discovered who he could lean on during difficult times.3 Others have similarly found that mapping one's social network can be a therapeutic strategy during stressful transitional periods.67 In the broader HPE methodological literature, the therapeutic benefits of participants engaging in various visual methods is also reported.68

5.6 Researcher–participant relationships in SNA

A final challenge can be that social network researchers' presence is far from neutral.33 In some instances, participants could name the researcher as a tie in their ego network. This may be likely if the researcher is affiliated with the social context where the research takes place. For example, Atherley, who was affiliated with the institution where her research took place, experienced this in her research. Two participants represented their relationship with Atherley (she was collecting data with them in a longitudinal study) as meaningful when describing their transition experiences when they entered clerkships.3 This led Atherley to be reflexive in her field notes of her embeddedness in the medical students' social networks.

Reflecting with participants on their social networks over time could result in an intimate researcher–participant relationship. Although Atherley acknowledged that her social positioning facilitated deeper conversations that allowed her to meet her research aims more authentically than she had anticipated, this could also have unintended consequences. Close researcher–participant relationships could lead to participants unintentionally feeling obligated to continue their participation.4749 Moreover, the intimacy generated in this approach may complicate the researcher–participant relationship more than a single research interview would.4749 These are all important issues to consider in employing this approach, particularly because a qualitative ego network approach involves participants holding a mirror up to their social realities.

6 QUALITATIVE EGO NETWORK APPROACHES IN FUTURE HPE RESEARCH

Qualitative ego network approaches can unearth voids in our understanding of the social aspects of the learning environment and offer new depths of insight.69

There are abundant research questions that could be answered using a qualitative ego network approach. One exciting area to explore could be examining multiple ego networks from connected individuals which can provide insight into the organisational structure in specific educational or work spaces.70 A qualitative ego network approach could detect key people who help information flow and have influence on attitudes and behaviours of others. These individuals (ie mediators/brokers) can be well connected or loosely connected (ie weak tie) in networks.3, 20 In our research, we discovered that a medical student in an administrative role (voted by the student body) had a broker role.3 This student frequently shared information to students transitioning to clerkship and was in a position of social power bearing important responsibilities. Rendering brokers visible could be vital to the educational institution so that brokers themselves are well supported and trained in their interconnected social position. A tension, however, is between the sensitive and confidential social network maps and whether they should be shared with educational institutions that could benefit from concrete visuals of their organisational structures and functions.33 As noted by other visual methodologists, images such as sociograms can render participants and bystanders more identifiable.9

Another intriguing phenomenon that receives little attention that a qualitative ego network approach could capture is the intentional development and diversifying of a learner's social network within and outside the institution of where medical training occurs.3, 45 It might be interesting, for example, to apply a qualitative ego network approach to understand whether or how a change in educational design changes students' social networks and shapes student learning in a variety of contexts.34, 71 Visualising network development as a result of participation in training could expand the dominant focus on training outcomes on cognitive and attitude development towards strategic network building and utilisation.67 Some have even suggested that an increase in network size or a more connected network over time could indicate a successful transition from newcomer to expert.72 As such, a trainee's social network and the qualitative nature of those ties documented over time could be an indicator of knowledge transfer and social integration.67

We hope this paper fosters thoughtful and appropriate use of qualitative ego network approaches to move the field forward in answering compelling questions related to the self in relation to others in the learning environment. A qualitative ego network approach harvests rich participant reflections of how their experiences in HPE situations are shaped by and shape society. We look forward to intentional, impactful and invigorated research using qualitative ego network approaches as we elaborate how self and society in specific HPE situations interact.

Abstract

Introduction: Our very sense of self emerges through interactions with others. As part of this State of the Science series on Self, Society, and Situation, we introduce a qualitative ego network research approach. This research approach offers insights into the self's (the ego's) interpretation of and relation to named others in the social network in question.

Purpose: Visual mapping of participants' social networks is gaining traction, yet this research approach has received no focused attention in the health professions education (HPE) literature. A qualitative ego network approach is a compelling research approach because it uniquely maps participants' perceptions of the complex social world they are embedded in. Although many methodologies can explore participants' social world, ego networks can enhance expression of tacit knowledge of one's social environment and encourage reflection. This approach, combined with other qualitative data, can also reveal hidden relational data that the researcher may not observe or consider. To demonstrate its value as a visual methodology, we will showcase two examples of qualitative ego network studies. We then balance the paper with some critical reflections of this research approach.

Conclusions: A qualitative ego network approach holds potential for deepening understanding of the self in relation to society and situation in future HPE research. We look forward to intentional, impactful and invigorated research using a qualitative ego network approach as we tackle unknowns about how self and society in specific HPE situations interact.
